Hello Family,
It sounds like Utah and Idaho got some snow. We haven't yet but it has been really cold here and windy. I guess we are getting some of the winds from hurricane Sandy--or so some lady at the store told me. Fun Fact: My adult tastebuds must be kicking in because I now like Italian food and pumpkin flavored things. Yes, you read that correctly. I don't know what has happened to me. Also, I tried Calamari and it was actually pretty good. Go figure!
Review of my Week:
Tuesday: We taught Melanie the Plan of Salvation. It was a lot for her to take in but she really liked it, and asked a lot of questions. Questions are always good. She's doing really well, we just need to get her to church. Unfortunately all of her kids have hockey games on Sunday mornings. We discussed the importance of church and asked her to pray about it. We also taught Marcos a new member lesson that night.
Wednesday: We walked everywhere we went because we are basically out of miles. Ha but it was good exercise. We walked to Vanessa's and met with her. She's a less-active that just had a baby. She told us that her and her boyfriend Nate (aka the baby daddy-who isn't a member) were getting married on Saturday, and invited us to the wedding. We also met with Trish, she isn't a member but she has a daughter that is and has recently returned home from her mission in Salt Lake.
Thursday: We had interviews/district meeting with President and Sister Holmes. It was such a warm day that President decided to have it outside in the woods. We sang Joseph Smith's First Prayer and it was really neat. Sister Holmes stressed the need to strengthen the members and become more converted to the Lord. And how we shouldn't be focused on numbers or statistics. Meeting with President was really good for me. He gave me a couple of scriptures to read (2 Nephi 4:15-35, Alma 26, Romans 10:1-5) about putting our trust in the Lord instead of trying to rely on our own strengths. You should look them up. They are really good! That night Marcos spoke at the mission fireside. He did such a good job!
Friday: Tracted, tracted, and tracted some more! That night we went to dinner at the Mangum's. They have 5 kids ranging in age from 3-12 years old. The mom is in the Relief Society Presidency and the dad reminds me of Rance... a lot. They gave us 2 referrals, we contacted them right away, and then set up a time to meet with them this week. They are both big families so keep your fingers crossed that everything goes well.
Saturday: We went to Nate and Vanessa's wedding. Bishop Ostraff married them in Sister Session's (the Relief Society President) home. Bishop talked a lot about eternal families and The Proclamation to the World.Nate accepted home teachers and asked us to pray. He seems to be really open to meeting with the missionaries, and so we are hoping to start teaching him soon. They are coming to the ward trunk-or-treat tomorrow night so that will be good for them to get to know the ward... Oh and it was at their wedding that I tried Calamari.
Sunday: We taught quite a few member lessons. Brother and Sister Castro went on and on about the election. I guess Laura Bush spoke in Livonia yesterday and Sister Castro went to it. We actually go to church in Livonia so we only missed her by a few hours. I don't know if you've heard of Ronna McDaniel but she's Mitt's niece and she does a lot of campaigning for him. She's in our ward and she was the one who arranged for Laura Bush to come speak yesterday. It will be interesting to see how next week goes... So, yeah that was my week.
Happy Birthday to Zade this week! I can't believe he's turning 1! Be sure to give him kisses from his aunt Jojo. Love you all! See you when I see you!
Love, Sister Mecham

From Sister Mecham:
Also, family I'm pretty sure I've been able to feel your prayers this week... And I needed them--thank you! Sister Goodman and I were able to go to the temple on Thursday. I just love the temple! As I was sitting in the Celestial room I got the impression and I shouldn't worry about numbers and just focus on the one. Wherever I'm at, whomever I'm with, I just need to be there with them- and that everything else will sort itself out. Surprisingly enough Sister Goodman also got that answer :) Well then Friday rolls around and our zone leaders call us. They told us that they'd been praying and felt that each area could find four new investigators on Saturday. Ha we'll just say so much for me not worrying about numbers :) Sister Goodman and I planned our Saturday and felt as if we really could do this.
Saturday rolls around and we had quite a few potentials we were going to stop by. We were confident that the Lord would provide a way for us to find our new investigators. And then door after door- none of our potentials were home. But our spirits weren't crushed, we had faith. And the whole day we both felt like we were exactly where we needed to be and all of the lessons we taught were spirit filled. Then before we know it it's 6:30 p.m. and we haven't found any yet. We decided it was time to tract some more. As we were tracting there was a lady outside doing yard work. We talked to her and she was really not interested. And as we are headed back to the car Sister Goodman grabs out our work gloves and says, "Lets go help her!" In my head I was going "Are you kidding? Our night is almost over and we still need new investigators. We don't have time for yard work." And then my answer at the temple entered my head "Be with the one." So, we did some yard work and talked with her and her husband. And you know what? I loved every minute of it! After we tracted some more to no avail. Mind you Sister Goodman was praying for me the whole time that I would know where we needed to be. So, I was the one making all of the decisions-being led by the spirit. For a moment I felt like I couldn't do it... And then-- finally at 8:50 p.m. I realize we need to stop by these two potentials that we had tracted into a few weeks ago. So, we start driving there and yep then we have to stop and wait for a train. Yes, a train. I started laughing so hard! Oh course there would be a train. Why wouldn't there be a train?! Oh man. We pull into Ronnie and Rhonda's at 8:55 p.m. We knock and there is no answer. We knock again and there is no answer. And we knocked one last time and just as we start to walk away to head home...Ronnie opens the door. He let us in and we taught him and Rhonda. And we have a return appointment for Wednesday.
So the moral of the story is- Don't get so caught up with everything you need to get done. Focus on one thing at a time or one person at a time, and the Lord will provide a way for everything else to get accomplished.

From Sister Mecham's email:
Here are a few of her thoughts this week:
"Have you ever been in a meeting and felt like everything being said was specifically meant for you? Well that was specialized training for me on Tuesday. President talked about the keys to fulfilling our purpose, and he committed us to pray continually. So I have been. And you know what? It's exhausting! Ha it takes so much mental exertion. But it helps me stay focused on my purpose, and I'm more in tune with the promptings of the spirit. And I have definitely been able to feel the difference it is makes. It's amazing the impact prayer truly does have. "
"We have been able to work with a lot of less actives this week. In every situation I feel as if they just need to be loved. We were able to teach them and commit them to act on what we had taught. They all responded quite well. I think sometimes when life gets hard we turn away from what can help us the most-- which is the gospel. I'm truly grateful for it and the support it has offered me in hard times. I have realized since being on the mission, it does matter where you are, members of our church are always there to help lift you up. And make you feel like family."
"I came across this quote this week (and by came across I mean President shared it with us in training) it's by President Spencer W. Kimball and I though I would share it, "How could a person possibly become what he is not thinking? Nor, is any thought when persistently entertained, too small to have its effect. The divinity that shapes our ends is indeed ourselves."
